Unveiling the Truth: Breaking Down Fad Diets for Sustainable Weight Loss

Feb 15, 2024
In a world obsessed with quick-fix solutions for weight loss, it’s important to understand what works and how to achieve sustainable weight loss. Fad diets often promise fast results, but at what cost? Whether it’s Keto, low carb, intermittent fasting or a juice cleanse they all work on the principle of restricting food groups (some more than others) and restricting calories. At equ, we believe in a realistic and sustainable approach to nutrition, focusing on personalised meal plans tailored to your unique needs. In this blog, we’ll breakdown fad diets and highlight the science-backed strategies that lead to lasting results.

Keto

The ketogenic diet, or keto diet, is a more restrictive version of the ‘low carb diet’. It essentially requires an individual to consume very minimal carbohydrates (20-30g per day) to push the body into a state of ketosis and use fat as the primary fuel instead of carbohydrates. The ‘keto flu’ is a common short term side effect that can include symptoms of fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, however this usually resolves within a few weeks. Whilst many people experience a significant drop in weight initially, the restrictiveness of the keto diet is not sustainable long term and results in regaining the initial weight loss.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent Fasting has become the latest diet craze for weight loss. It involves restricting the time in which you consume food. This can be done through a variety of approaches.

5:2 method

This involves eating a balanced healthy diet 5 days per week and severely restricting calories (500-800) calories 2 days per week.

Time Restriction

The most common method of intermittent fasting is fasting for a set amount of time e.g. 16 hours and eating within the remaining 8 hours.

Due to the restriction in calories, people undertaking this diet usually experience weight loss, though not often in the long term.

Juice Cleanse/Detox

Juice cleanses are marketed as a detox/reset method to shift weight fast and cleanse your body. It involves consuming juice or soup only, for a set period of time (generally 3-14 days). The main issue with this is that you are not consuming vital macronutrients to support normal bodily processes, including detoxification. Due to the severe restriction, you will often see weight loss, but this is due to fluid loss, not fat loss and the weight is then regained upon commencement of normal eating. Side effects of cleanses can include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea and digestive upset.

Why Fad Diets are not the Best Diet Plan for Weight Loss:

Restrictive:

  • Fad diets focus on restricting or eliminating entire food groups. While this may result in initial weight loss, it’s neither practical or sustainable long term. Restriction not only restricts energy intake, it can also exclude important macronutrients, vitamins and minerals, which are important for our bodies to thrive. Our personalised meal plans, embrace a balanced approach, ensuring you get the nutrients your body needs to thrive, while still reaching your health goals.

Yo-Yo Effect:

  • One of the major downfalls of most fad diets is the yo-yo effect. Fast weight loss, which is generally unsustainable, is often followed by rapid regain which can wreak havoc on your metabolism. Focusing on sustainable and realistic goals, ensures that you lose the weight and keep it off long term.

One size fits all:

  • Generic diets fail to acknowledge the individuality of each person’s body and lifestyle. Our best weight loss program is grounded in personalisation, considering factors such as age, activity level, and dietary preferences to create a plan that works uniquely for you.
